- I have actually found the joy of running!

Interview with Ronny Brede Aase, by Stina G. Karlsen

During last year's P3 campaign, Ronny was challenged to run a half marathon during the Oslo Marathon 2018. What has he learned about running in the last year and how is he doing? Check it out here.

- It was very easy to say yes to this a year ago, and think that on January 1 I will be a new and better person. Now, on the other hand, I begin to feel the lump of fear grow inside me, says P3's cheerful radio host, Ronny Brede Aase.

Donated starting places

During last year's P3 campaign, the Oslo Marathon donated 300 starting places to income for UNICEF, where we together with P3 encouraged people to sign up and run in teams with P3-Ronny. Now there is less than a month left until the Oslo Marathon - and how has it actually gone with the training preparations for P3's team leader?

- I started early in the year with a good motivational chat with Puls-Yngvar, and got tips for a plan I should follow. He is such a positive and realistic training guy that I like, and he asked me to start walking at a fast pace, says Ronny.

In the winter, Ronny started with just that - he walked at a fast pace 3 times a week. He found a good rhythm on it, but struggled at first to go over to running. During the spring and summer, however, he has found joy in jogging, and likes to jog 5-6 km in the neighborhood.

Downloaded Strava

- You know what? I actually liked it a bit. I have downloaded Strava and found the joy of making routes in the neighborhood, running around the Botanical Garden and discovering places in a new way. I have had so many good experiences with jogging, he says.

Previously, he has seen training as a somewhat strenuous project with a lot of logistics - this with "packing a training bag, getting to the gym, being there for a certain time so that there will be some point and actually knowing what to do there". Now he has learned that training, and running in particular, can be so terribly easy.

- For me, everything now is about getting changed into training clothes as soon as possible when I get home, and lock myself out. When I'm on the other side of that doorframe, I'm going to jog. Then there is no going back, he says.

-Violently excited

Thinking that a little is better than nothing has been an important turning point for him. If he only gets to 3km a day, it's still great. But then he will not run 3 km at the Oslo Marathon - but 21km. He has mixed feelings about it.

- It feels a bit like when you woke up the day you went to the dentist as a child. I am very excited, but I have such a terrible desire to make it happen, he says.

He will estimate that he may have covered 100 jogging kilometers this year, and has managed to jog trips up to 10km. He has also run more on asphalt than before. He just hopes that the effort he has put in is enough.

- I have never jogged as far as 21 km in my life and I am a great guy with little training experience, but I have a terribly strong will. It just has to work, he says.

Will continue to run

His biggest and only goal is to reach the finish line within maximum time. His tactic is to try to hang on to the cruise control at 2.45 as far as possible. He is determined that there will be some tough hours out on the trail, but tries to focus on how short this time is in his life.

- I know I'm going to have a hell of a few hours in a month, and then it's over. I try to concentrate on it, and how proud I will be if I make it happen and not how similarly sad I will be if it does not work, he says and adds:

- But if I do not completely break the half marathon, then I actually think I will be able to continue running a couple of days a week - and I never thought I would say that!
