The right shoes for the surface are important regardless of summer or winter. You should be sure that you have the right shoes and equipment in relation to your running set.

Winter running can be synonymous with a treadmill in the studio for some. While others prefer to run outside all year round where sub-zero temperatures are no obstacle. If you run outside in the winter, you must first and foremost pay attention to the surface. Is it ice and snow or is it mostly bare asphalt where you run?

Straight shoes, for the right surface
If it is snowy or slippery, you should have a pair of running shoes that have a good rubber compound in the outsole. It is not always the size of the knobs in the outsole that gives a good grip, but the softness of the sole. Is it minus degrees and you are going to run for an hour? Then some running shoes become a little hard and stiff in the shock absorption. It gives a slightly poorer running feeling and the grip can be impaired somewhat. An exception you should take a closer look at is adidas' running shoes with Boost cushioning. They are temperature resistant and behave exactly the same in function at 40 degrees as at minus 20. Here you have a unique opportunity to have running shoes that behave the same inside the treadmill as outside in the winter cold.

In addition to soft and good shock absorption, you should be sure that your shoes have a good grip in the kick. When the shoes slip a little in each step, it is easy to get a sore Achilles or osteomyelitis. Therefore, it is important to choose a pair that, for example, has extra Continental rubber in the sole. Just like on our car tires.

Make sure you have the right shoes for your running set. If you are an active runner, it is inspiring to have several pairs of shoes intended for different running sessions. A pair of hiking shoes or a pair of lightweight shoes are extra fun to vary with.

The spikes out?
Getting your favorite running shoes spiked up is also recommended. I myself have a pair of shoes that are used on the really icy days. Your local sports shop will most likely spike your shoes for you during the day. There are also some suppliers that sell ready-made studded shoes. It may be worth checking out the selection if you exercise a lot outside in the winter.
