Q&A - HOW DOES A VIRTUAL RACE WORK?

For many, this with virtual races is completely new, and many wonder how it actually works. Therefore, we have collected some common questions and answers. It's really very simple, and not least very fun!

WHERE CAN I RUN?

Anywhere! Find a trail you like, maybe you have a favorite place to run? Do you want to run a fast track or challenging track? You decide. You can run around and around your house, in the neighborhood, on the mountain, on a treadmill - literally anywhere. Do you want to share your favorite trail with us? Send an email to info@oslomaraton.no

CAN I RUN WITH FRIENDS?

Yes you can! But, remember to follow the government's guidelines and rules for infection control when you run, and show consideration for others you meet on the trail.

DO I GET A START NUMBER?

Yes! You will receive your personal start number by e-mail, which you can print out and attach to your running jersey on 19 September!
Don't have a printer? Visit your nearest Sport1 or Anton Sport (in Norway), they can help you!

You will also receive a digital start number that you can share on social media!

WHEN SHOULD I START?

You decide when you want to start. The only rule is that you must start after 00:00 and finish before kl. 23:59 on 19 September 2020.

IS IT A MAX TIME?

In the virtual version of the BMW Oslo Marathon, you decide how long you want to spend. The only rule we have when it comes to time is that start time and end time must be on race day, September 19 between 00:00 and 23:59.

This means that you have no maximum time to keep, and you can set the pace you want. You can walk, jog or run - it's up to you!

Note: We will check suspiciously fast times and all runners who are among the top 20 on the results list.

HOW DOES THE TIMING WORK?

Start the session on your chosen device and run your distance.
You have to take the time for your race. You can do this with the help of a smartphone, smartwatch, heart rate monitor or an activity tape. This will be your personal "virtual timer".

NOTE - be sure to run the correct number of kilometers!
You have to run the number of kilometers and meters your distance requires for the time to be real. This means that if you are going to run a Half Marathon, for example, you have to run 21.1 kilometers. If you run shorter than the distance requires, our system will calculate an average time based on the total of your race, and you will not get your real time. (If you run too far it goes well, the system cuts the race to the correct number of kilometers).

Pauses?
Do you have a device that records breaks? Although your device may record breaks you take through the session, our time system does not! It measures the total time of the session, from start to finish.

Completion and registration of time
Once you have run the number of kilometers your distance requires, stop the session and save it to your device. Then log in to "My page" to upload your race. Press the «my time» button. Here you get four different options to choose from to upload your time. Read our guide that teaches you how to register your time HERE.

Do not want to register time?
Then you can press «complete». You will be included in the results list, but your time will not be displayed.

Do you want to compete for a podium place?
Then there are some more rules and guidelines you must follow for your time to be approved - read them HERE.

WHICH DEVICES CAN I USE?

All smartphones, smartwatches, heart rate monitors or activity bands that support logging of sessions can be used. If you do not have a watch, you can use a smartphone by, for example, downloading the Strava app, where you can create a profile for free. You can easily use this to log the session, and add it to "my page" afterwards, and you will get it in time if you wish.

CAN I RUN WITHOUT REGISTERING TIME?

Yes you can. If you do not want to register your time, you can go to "my page" and register that you have Finished without uploading time.

WILL MY TIME BE OFFICIAL?

Yes, if you register your race with time, it will be added to the official results list, which will be posted on the website.

If you do not want to register your time, you can choose to only register that you have completed. Then you will be included in the result list as a participant, but your time will not be displayed.

DO I WANT TO RECEIVE A MEDAL?

Once you have completed the race and registered your participation on "my page", you will receive a great virtual medal by e-mail. You can share this on your social media.

In addition, you can reward yourself with a real medal, which you can order on "My page".

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHEAT?

HOW DOES TIMING WORK?

Start a session and run your chosen distance.
Your smart phone, smart watch, fitness watch or activity tracker is your personal “virtual timing chip”.

When you reach the total amount of kilometers you have chosen to run you stop the session - and this is important! You must run the total amount of kilometers for your timing to be true. Example; if you are running the Half Marathon, you have to run 21.1 kilometers. If you run too short our system will calculate an average time based on the total time and distance of your race and you will not get your real time. (If you run too far you'll be OK - it cuts the race at the correct amount of kilometers).

Break?
Please also note, that even though your watch or phone deducts breaks you may have taken during your session, our system does not. It measures the total time of your race from start to finish.

Finish and registration
When you finish your race you store it on your device. To register you log on to “My Page” and press “my time”. You will have 4 different options for registering your time. Read our guide on how to register your time HERE.

You can finish the race, and register without time. Just press the “Finished-button” on my page. Your name will be on the result list, but your timing will not.
