Class 6A follows in the footsteps of Grete Waitz

Class 6A at Hasle School, with a large proportion of multilingual students has the project to participate in the BMW Oslo Marathon 2016. The background for their interest in the event is, among other things, that Grete Waitz grew up on Keyserløkka and had her primary school years at Hasle school.

Beyond joint school affiliation with Grete Waitz, the triggering factor for our motivation to be able to run the BMW Oslo Marathon was the annual Nyabondo race. One race that is held every year at Hasle and is to raise money for a school for poor, deaf children in Kenya. Through it we noticed that we can do a little more than we thought we could by having something positive to run for and against! We even have a student who has lost his father to cancer, so it feels good and inspiring to run for such a good cause as the cancer cause, says class teacher Elisabeth.

In connection with participation in the BMW Oslo Marathon, class 6A was visited by Grete's husband, Jack Waitz. He told about the whole story of Grete, the development of races for women and races in general. The students were eager and Waitz got to answer several different questions, as well as sign autographs and take pictures with everyone! In the class, 22 of the students will participate in the distance dedicated to Grete Waitz «10 for Grete». The remaining 4 will participate in the distance "3 for all" on Friday afternoon.

Class teacher Elisabeth says that they combine running with other activities at school, and make this a fun game during school time. In upper secondary school, students are thrown straight into the Cooper test, so it's nice to get some experience with this in recent years in primary school, says Elisabeth.

Next year is also our last year before we split into different classes and many disappear to different schools to go to middle school. The BMW Oslo Marathon will therefore also be our social project for the class before our roads are separated as a class, the class teacher concludes.

We look forward to following class 6A towards this year's BMW Oslo Marathon, and hope they can inspire others to start running and do this as a fun activity together!
